Great British Bake Off Bake Along – Week 1

Mary and Paul are back, and I’m already running late. I’d be useless in the GBBO tent, all that stress and cameras. I think I’ll stick to my messy kitchen.

I love GBBO, I am a devout fan, much to the disgust of some members of my family. Every year I watch religiously and think why have I never made any of the wonderful things those lovely bakers slave over. I think about it, but that’s as far as I get. Next thing I know, Sue and Mel are back with the innuendos and I’ve made nothing.

This year I thought I’d take part in a Bake Along. I’ve yet to understand Twitter, I’m trying I promise, but there is a very handy hashtag #GBBOtwitterbakealong. Although I’m not part of the Twitterverse, I am on Istagram (follow me @grelly_baby) where the same hashtag exists. Take a look, some people are pretty amazing.

So for the first week, which has turned into the second week, I thought I’d have a go at the mirror glaze cake. If you don’t know what this is then just go to Pinterest. Go there right now! Wow, come back now. I have cake I promise. I searched high and low on the internet and finally came across a recipe for a mirror glaze I liked the look of. Recipe here.

Paired with a vanilla, gluten-free version of my favourite genoise sponge, a blueberry compot and a vanilla buttercream I was excited to start my first GBBO bake.

Making cakes and icing them is nothing new for me, so I wont bore you with the details. Once my cake was assembled and iced I stuck it in the freezer and moved onto my mirror glaze.  Carina’s instructions are easy to follow and worked really well. The recipe requires patience, something I don’t always have and I admit my patience was some-what lacking. When it says wait until the glaze reaches 37C, wait until then. My glaze may not have reached 37c which may be the reason some of my buttercream began to melt. I’ll try harder next time I promise! In the end I don’t think the end product was too bad. Not one I will rush to recreate thought…

A bit of the Wilton gel colour magic and a lot of mess and I was able to take a selfie in my cake. A selfie, in a cake. I think I may have peaked too early. I’ll put the edible glitter away from now and look to next weeks challenge.
